Acoustic Music Society of Calgary

The home of the Nickelodeon, now in it's 37th year, is the Crescent Heights Community Hall, 1101 – 2nd Street NW in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It is located in Crescent Heights Park at the corner of Second Street and Eleventh Avenue NW. The Nickelodeon is a volunteer-operated, non-profit organization. The Nick was founded in 1980 by the members of what would become the Nick house band, Plug Nickel and their friends. Plug Nickel was initially comprised of Bob de Wolff, Al Williams, Don Gowan, J.P.Huang and Barb Herbutt.

The Nick was the fourth volunteer-run folk club to be established in Calgary after the Calgary Folk Club, Rocky Mountain Folk Club and Saturday Night Special. The intention of our founders was to include a broader selection of performers and musical genres in the Nick line-up, hence the name Nickelodeon Music Club.

The first Nick concert took place at the Ramsay Community Hall on January 19, 1980 featuring houseband Plug Nickel, Edmonton swing band Fat Chants and guitar wizard, Bob Evans. That first “season” presented 7 concerts and among others, featured the debut of Connie Kaldor, Ken Hamm and David Essig to the Calgary folk club scene.

The legal name of The Nick is The Acoustic Music Society of Calgary.

Notes: the address given in an earlier question is the Crescent Heights Community Centre. We rent space for the 12 concerts held annually. Also, the number of 193 people that we serve is the maximum # of patrons that can attend each of the 12 concerts.
